Pigeon DLO.
For reading we focused on pigeons for a couple of weeks! Lyndon, Cecillia, Jessie, Juanita, Ma'ata and Harlem were in my group called group D. Did you know that pigeons can start mating and can reproduce (make babies) from the age of 7 months! We made this presentation for all our information on pigeons, also we stated why pigeons are pests and added information about Cher Ami who was a famous pigeon in WW1 and she saved over 100 soldiers by carrying a message over the front line.

Reading Knowledge Game.
For reading I played this game to test my reading skills. The topic in the game was about how squirrels collect nuts and where they find them. You need to read the story then answer the questions, you need to roll the dice to go to the next part of the story. I had a lot of fun playing this game and testing my knowledge.

Reading Challenge T4.
For reading we paired up into groups to explore the reading challenge. We started by getting together, after that we grabbed the first story. We had to read it and write a 25 word sentence to retell the story in our own words. The next task was tickling fish. We had to follow the instructions and fill in the blank words. That was a fun task! Once we had finished the tasks we got to do the super challenge which was another fill in the blanks but longer and harder! In the end we all marked our work and I had a fun time working with my group and it was a fun way to explore and follow the instructions given.

Word Study.
For reading I have created this word study DLO. I had to think of interesting words and write the meanings of them. Then I found photos of the meanings and wrote sentences with the word in it. It was fun using different words and seeing what they look like in a photo!

Read Theory
For 20 minutes in class we boost our reading knowledge by logging on to Read Theory. It helps us to read the text and answer the questions. When you get a bit stuck with the questions you can go back and read the text to look for information so that you understand what the question is! It is fun to challenge myself and go up different grades!

Authors Purpose.
Today for reading I played a game to help me understand authors purpose. The game was fun and the objective is to read the story then guide the correct answer into the light bulb, then you guide the wrong answer into the light bulbs which aren't lit up! It was fun and also helped me with my reading!

Super Smog in China
Officials close schools and ground flights as dense smog shrinks visibility in Harbin, a city in China
OCT 21, 2013 | By Kelli Plasket with TIME and AP reporting

Winter is coming to northern China—and with it, another season of heavy smog. Smog is a hazy blend of smoke and fog caused by pollution in industrial areas. On Monday, in the large city of Harbin, small-particle pollution rose to a record 40 times higher than what is considered to be safe by the World Health Organization (WHO). The thick haze caused visibility to fall to less than half a football field, grinding the city to a halt.

When Wu Kai, a 33-year-old Harbin resident, looked out her apartment window on Monday, she couldn’t see anything. At first, she thought it was snowing. Then she realized it was smog. Her husband left for work wearing a mask to cover his mouth and nose and stop him from breathing in the pollution. His regular bus wasn’t running because of the low visibility. “It’s scary, too dangerous,” Kai told the Associated Press. “How could people drive or walk on such a day?”
Many people can’t get around. Authorities in the city closed primary and middle schools and some highways on Monday. Harbin’s Taiping International Airport canceled or delayed at least 40 flights.
Smog Season
Northern China experiences year-round air pollution from factory emissions and the huge number of vehicles on the road. Typically, the air pollution is at its worst in the winter, when more coal is burned to heat homes and buildings. Harbin’s municipal heating systems kicked in on Sunday. On Monday, visibility was down to less than 55 yards, according to state media.
China’s environmental protection agency monitors the level of harmful particles in the air. The agency saw readings as high as 1,000 micrograms per cubic meter at several monitoring stations in Harbin on Monday. WHO says a safe level is 25 micrograms per cubic meter.
Pollution Problems
China’s major cities have some of the world’s worst smog. Record levels of air pollution crippled Beijing, the capital, for weeks last winter. The Chinese government, which had long ignored the problem, is finally taking notice. In September, China’s Cabinet announced a plan that aims to reduce the country’s heavy reliance on coal to below 65 percent of total energy usage by 2017. Last week, Beijing also announced a set of color-coded emergency measures for bad pollution days.
Fixing the pollution program will be costly for the Chinese government. Officials say the country will need to spend nearly $817 billion to fight pollution. But the cost of ignoring it could be much worse.

China's Consequences Of A Second Child.
Harry, Manu and I have made this DLO about the consequences of having two children in China. The rule is if you have 2 children in china and one child is a girl they either kill them or abandon them somewhere! I myself think this is cruel and hurtful and my group thinks the same way about it.

Giant Pandas.
For reading we have been learning to synthesise. Synthesising is when you read information and then you change it to make an opinion. We had to find a partner and recall what we knew about giant pandas. I knew that they live in the jungle and forests and eat bamboo. Then we researched about them and what we found out and I saw that they eat 22 different types of bamboo which is fascinating. One of the bamboo type is called fargesia. Then I synthesised the information and made a statement. My statement is that us humans should use other materials to make things instead of bamboo, because bamboo is the pandas food source.

Naval Flag And The Coat Of Arms DLO.
A naval flag is a signalling flag that is used by different navies. It is a lot like our NZ flag with a white ensign but it has a anchor on it. The Coat of Arms is a shield of or for a person, a family or a country. I researched all of this information and made it into this DLO.
